Southport High School was visited by Mayor Greg Ballard on Aug. 19 to address the senior class. The convocation's main focus was encouraging each senior to find his or her own way through life, but also knowing that one can't get anywhere alone. During the convocation the Mayor gave senior Nicole Thompson an award for her improvement as a student. Thompson received a certificate as well as two tickets to the Mayor's suite for the Indianapolis Colts season opener against the Chicago Bears. In addition to giving the award, Ballard spoke to the entire senior class about various topics such as public safety, the importance of education, and about being the mayor. When he was finished, Ballard took questions from the students. Some of the questions asked were about the funding for the arts and the new Colts' stadium. When the convocation came to an end, Mayor Ballard left the senior class with one piece of advice, "Dream big. There is a lot out there for you."
